The Unpardonable Sin

Mark 3:28-29: Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme: But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

International Standard Bible Dictionary: Blaspheme: Defamation or evil-speaking or impious, and irreverent speech against God.

Easton*s Bible Dictionary: Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost (Matthew 12:31-32; Luke 12:10) is regarded by some as a continued and obstinate rejection of the gospel, and hence is an unpardonable sin, simply because as long as a sinner remains in unbelief he voluntarily excludes himself from pardon. Others regard the expression as designating the sin of attributing to the power of Satan those miracles which Christ performed, or generally those works which are the result of the Spirit*s agency. They who deny his Messiahship blaspheme Jesus (Lu 22:65; John 10:36).

The Holy Spirit is Christ*s representative here on earth. Jesus speaks to the hearts of men through Him and only through Him. He is the voice of Christ. He speaks on behalf of Christ. Blaspheme against the Holy Spirit drives away the Only One who can speak to your heart about its need for the Lord Jesus. When you refuse to obey the Holy Spirit you are rejecting Christ. In a sense you are committing two sins. You are sinning against the Holy Spirit and against Christ. When you reject the messenger you reject the message and vice versa.

When you reject The Holy Spirit you reject His functions which are vital to salvation. Here are four of them:

1. Reproving you of your sin and convincing you of your need for Jesus. John 16:7-8: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

2. Baptizing you into the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13: For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

3. He seals you and is Himself the seal. Ephesians 4:30: And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22: Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

4. Informing you that you are a child of God. Romans 8:16: The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:

When you resist the Holy Spirit you will not learn the significance or your sin, you will not learn the certainty of your judgment, you will not learn of your need for the Saviour, you will not be baptized into the body of Christ, you will not be sealed, you will not have the seal within you, you will not become a child of God and you will not hear from Him that you are a child of God.
